Lingerie wars are coming to a mall near you.

Retailers including J.C. Penney Co., Target Corp. and Kohl's Corp. have discovered that fashionable underwear for women is a hot trend. To cash in on it, they are launching lingerie lines, giving old ones a makeover or redecorating dressing rooms and offering professional fitting services.

Other companies, including Chico's FAS Inc., American Eagle Outfitters Inc. and Charming Shoppes Inc.'s Lane Bryant, have created stand-alone lingerie stores.

The retailers are hoping to steal some thunder from Limited Brands Inc.'s Victoria's Secret chain, which has dominated fashion lingerie in the United States for many years.

"Lingerie is second to handbags as the fastest-growing apparel category, so everyone in retail is trying to capitalize on that growth," said Marshal Cohen, chief research analyst with NPD Group, a market-research firm .

U.S. retail sales of intimate apparel last year rose 10 percent to reach $10.5 billion, more than double the growth rate in 2005, according to NPD. Driving that growth are new technologies and fabrics that allow for innovations such as laser-cut seamless bras, as well as the growing fashion appeal of lingerie, particularly among young women.

Many clients of Tara Finkstein, a chiropractor at Sanders Chiropractic in Colorado Springs, carry 15- to 20-pound purses, in addition to laptop bags and gym bags. Lugging around that much weight can cause problems over the long haul, especially because women tend to favor one side when carrying a purse. That puts pressure on the brachial plexus, a bundle of nerves running from the spine down the arm. In the worst cases, damage to this area can be irreversible, causing a loss of feeling in the arm. "What we're seeing is overdeveloped muscles on just one side," Finkstein said. "It also tends to alter the bone structure." So why do we put ourselves through all of this pain? Well, that's what women do. "Traditionally, women -- as being in charge of the household and child raising -- have carried stuff not only for them, but the household and children," said Patti Adler, sociology professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder. But even before motherhood, women tend to carry more than they need. Hersha Steinbock, instructor in the School of Fashion at the Academy of Art University in led light bulbs San Francisco, offers this explanation: "There have been people who have suggested that there is a Freudian interpretation of why we are connected to our bags as women -- that somehow it represents the womb, the inner most recesses," she said. "We carry (our purses) like we carry children. We carry our bag with our things from our inside, so to speak."

So there's that creepy way of looking at it. But she also offers this explanation: history.

Up until the 20th century, American and European women owned little more than their jewels, which they carried in a small pouch under their dresses to use as currency in case of an emergency, Steinbock said. Men also carried bags, filled with paperwork or religious relics. Along the line, the genders split -- men got briefcases and women took the purse.

"There's this whole history to this that makes the bag -- this thing that holds stuff -- significant," Steinbock said. "What is this thing that is causing women to collect these items, to covet them? What gives them so much meaning?"

Then we have a more contemporary explanation: the celebrity culture (oh, Hollywood, how we love to hate you). With celebrities toting $10,000 "arm candy," and the market following whatever Britney or Paris do, designers are clamoring to unveil the next hottest thing or at least rip off the latest trend, and lately, that's meant going

The truth is out - women keep a lot of out-dated rubbish in their make-up bags. A leading cosmetic company, obviously trying to encourage us to ditch the old and buy some of their new products, have done a survey, which indicates that women, for example, are very reluctant to part with a well-used lipstick even if its probably a health hazard; their blusher compacts can be up to two years old and the bag is the favourite place for their headache pills!

Britney Spears always carries a blemish stick - her mum apparently is trying to get her to stop eating rubbish, Victoria Beckham would never be seen dead without her lip-liner pencil and many other celebrities, such as Joan Collins, obviously like the glossy lip look. Their handbags must be weighed down with the stuff.

So a snap look at the contents of some bags not far away from this desk revealed the following:

I don't like foundation, but I also have a tube of Clarins tinted moisturiser, colour blond, in the bag. Great for summer.

Ruth, who designs these pages says the most important item in her bag is her powder compact. Being fair skinned she likes soft shades. Ruth says: "My portable make-up bag may be minimal, but that's no reflection on the sack-full I start out with in the morning.

"I swear by Vichy tinted moisturiser and bourgeois eye-shadows and blusher, which, once applied, stay in place all day.

So as long as I have my face powder, to correct a shiny complexion and a little lipstick, I'm pretty much armed . .

The most important item in my own bag is the Estee Lauder LipZone anti-feathering complex, which is applied before lipstick, to keep it intact. For some reason I'm carrying around a small pot of concealer, which looks quite ancient and, in more recent times, I've also taken a shine to Clarins lip gloss.

There's a well-worn Estee Lauder lip liner/lip brush - probably a health hazard. My lone lipstick is from Marks and Spencer and the brush is to get at the bits in the very bottom, because I was taught to be thrifty and like to use every last brushful. Sometimes lipsticks can cost as much as pounds 14 each, so a brush is a good investment.

I have a two-tone blusher compact by Estee Lauder (minus brush) which comes with its own mirror and the rubbish includes two parking receipts.

And how often do we change the bags? Not very often according to the research. In fact bags themselves can be a health hazard, mostly caused by lipsticks, the tops of which can come adrift in the bag. Still, if the lips look nice, does it really matter?

ROISIN McAuley was standing outside the posh shop Fennicks in London's Bond Street when she got a call from her agent Charlie.

Not only did she have an offer to publish her new book Singing Bird, in fact two publishers were bidding for the novel he told her.

A flabbergasted Roisin did what all sensible women would have done in the circumstances - she immediately decided to treat herself to a new handbag from Fennicks and that's why, today, she calls her expensive little red, suede number her 'book bag'.

These are heady days for the Cookstown-born author who was a familiar voice and face on BBC radio and television for years.

Publishers have been looking for a natural successor to Maeve Binchy and, in Roisin, they appear to have found her.

Of course, the two are quite different writers. Roisin says she likes to write in the first person.

Her editor Rosie de Courcy describes her as 'one of the most led t5 tube naturally-gifted storytellers I have ever encountered'.

It's a nice turn to Roisin's life - the second major one a decade.

She was a respected journalist and documentary maker for the BBC, travelling all over the world and working on such programmes as Newsnight, Brasstacks and File on 4.

She reported for the station through the Gulf War, the dedicated reporter who felt very much at home packing the rucksack and flying off to a troubled spot.

And then the unexpected happened. She says: "I was in my early 40s when, in 1994, I took a break and went on a walking holiday in France. And that's how I met my husband Richard who is a solicitor. Suddenly I didn't want to go travelling anymore. He had two children and I had a readymade family. It was absolutely lovely."

The pair enjoyed golf and she decided to write a book on the sport.

The Essential Guide to Holiday Golf in Ireland, published by Appletree, was an instant success.

She says: "I had always wanted to write something and thought it might be a screenplay or a work like that. I was a bit fearful of writing a novel. But when I wrote the golf book my fear of writing a novel fell away.

I had this story in my head and Richard encouraged me to get on with it while he was working and able to support me. I think he hopes he has married his pension!"

Roisin thought if she could make a few thousand pounds writing the book she would be lucky indeed.

She says: "It's a two book deal. Singing Bird is set in the south of Ireland, the next one will be set around the north coast area and this second one is about a woman who meets a man she suspects of killing his first wife.

My agent decided that Singing Bird should be an auction publishing bid and initially there were nine publishers involved. I was buckling at the knees when I realised how much interest there was in it.

"When Charlie rang me in Bond Street to tell me that it was down to Headline and Harper Collins and of the money involved, you could have wrung me out like a dish rag.

I'VE lived in Knowsley for several years and watched my council gradually destroy their refuse/recycling ability. Then I printing received a posh advert through my letterbox.

I applauded the introduction of recycling bins, but a tiny green box that requires actual lifting to the pavement for collection and which must contain paper, magazines, catalogues, junk mail, food & drink cans, glass bottles & jars is a bit ridiculous.

My green box can cope with around six newspapers, three glass jars at the most and nothing else. It's also agony on my weak back.

As for the next-to-useless blue bin, the ad said: "Put in cardboard and a few twigs only! No turf, plastic, metal,
embroidered patches textiles, food scraps, general refuse".

How "green'" is my so-called environmentally friendly council I ask? Not at all is my genuine feeling. Knowsley Council is clearly just doing the bare minimum to please Europe.

On a further note, please ask council employees to replace green bin lids, not shove emptied green boxes across drives or in the front garden.
