TWO convicts on day release were picked up from their prison gates by accomplices to take part in an armed raid on a jeweller's shop.

Photographs of the robbery in Richmond were issued by police today as a four-man gang began a total of 33 years in jail.

CCTV images show a robber in a crash helmet threatening staff.

The gang burst into the Ernest Jones shop in George Street and stole Rolex watches worth Pounds 120,000 from a display cabinet.

But armed officers from the Flying Squad were waiting for them.

Today, it emerged that two of the group - Delroy Roberts and Matthew Elderfield, both 30, - were picked up outside Spring Hill prison near Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire.

Adam Macauley, 26, drove them to garages in Old Windsor, Berkshire, where they met 29-year-old Michael Priestley.

There, the two prisoners were provided with clothing, a Montblanc Watch firearm and a stolen Ducati motorbike. The gang then travelled in pairs to Richmond.

They arrived at the jeweller's at 11am and Roberts walked into the shop, threatening staff with an imitation handgun. Flying Squad officers moved in, one of them wrestling Elderfield to the ground as he tried to get away on the motorbike.

Macauley and Roberts were also held while Priestley was found a short time later at The Bells of Ouseley pub in Old Windsor when he returned to his car in the car park.

All four pleaded guilty to armed robbery at Kingston Girard-Perregaux Replica Watch Crown Court.

Priestley, of Weybridge, and Roberts, from Burnham, Berkshire, were sentenced to nine years each.

PATROLS have been stepped up and a probe involving detectives and uniformed colleagues launched following a spate of house burglaries.

Since mid-December at least eight houses in the Douglas area have been targeted and thousands of pounds-worth of property stolen.

Police said they have proof two of the burglaries are linked, but are keeping an 'open mind' about whether the others are connected.

Inspector Mike Ward said the team of CID and uniformed officers tasked with investigating the thefts are treating each incident separately, but looking for anything which may link the crimes.

A SPADE was taken from a garden shed and used to smash a patio window in a raid on a house in the Whitestone area of Nuneaton.

Intruders stole three bottles of champagne, three bottles of whisky and other property during the burglary at Lace front wigs the house, in Whitestone Road.

Chip Ganassi has another winner.

While his teams have struggled the last few years in NASCAR and the Indy Racing League, Ganassi's sports car team has been prospering.

The IRL team has not won a race since Scott Dixon won in 2003 on the way to an IRL championship. The NASCAR team's last win was by Jamie McMurray near the end of the 2002 season.

But Ganassi, whose team won an unprecedented four straight championships from 1997 to 2000 in the CART series, started his sports car team two years ago and gained quick success.

Two years ago, Scott Pruett and Max Papis combined to win the Grand American Road Racing Daytona Prototype championship, grabbing four race wins. Last year, they won three times and finished second.

And on Saturday and Sunday, Dixon and new teammate Dan Wheldon joined Ganassi NASCAR driver Casey Mears in co-driving a Lexus Riley to a hard-earned victory in the Rolex 24, America's most prestigious endurance race.

"Let's hope this is just the start of a lot of good things for this team," said Wheldon, the reigning IRL champion and Indianapolis 500 winner, who won in his first start since leaving Andretti Green Racing.

All three drivers contributed to the Daytona win, but it appeared Dixon and Wheldon took the lead and were particularly comfortable as teammates.

"We get on pretty good. But we've sort of been teammates for years," said Dixon, noting he was the CART driver for the PacWest team in 2001 while Wheldon drove for the PacWest's Indy Lights team.

"This race is so difficult, so hard to win," Dixon added. "I can hardly believe we won it. But Chip gives us a great team and great equipment. Dan and I were also fast in the Phoenix (IRL) test earlier this week and I think there are going to be a lot more wins this year."

Wheldon agreed that the two will be good teammates.

"He's been on a different team the last couple of years, but there is a good rapport in IndyCars," the Englishman said. "As close as we drive together, you've got to trust one another."

Finishing 25th was a team that included Eric Lux, 17, of Amherst, N.Y. He shared the No. 74 Rembrandt Charms Tafel Racing Porsche with Andrew Davis, Charles Espenlaub, Dr. Michael Cawley and Jim Tafel.
